Usually Alto Adige’s cooperatives are characterized by a selection that draws on all of the region’s grapes. Willi Sturz’s is no exception, even if the Tramin winery is primarily identified with Gewürztraminer, the aromatic cultivar whose homeland is Cortaccia and Termeno. The winery’s almost 300 grower members cultivate, on average, less than a hectare each, making for a veritable viticultural puzzle. They give rise to a selection that brings together the fullness of Bassa Atesina with a more ‘nordic’ finesse. Once again their Nussmabumer earned the highest applause. 2017 saw the Gewürztraminer manage its exuberant force with a rare touch of elegance. Their Pinot Grigio Unterebner ’17 expresses broad and deep fruit, which develops across a crisp, gutsy palate. Their Stoan ’17 doesn’t rely on aromatic shortcuts and impresses with its class, while their Terminum ’16 proves to be a passito of great harmony.
