Cantina Tramin, Maglen Pinot Noir Riserva 2018 Alto Adige
From vineyards on the other side of the valley to most of their best white-wine vineyards. West-facing, getting the evening sun, on calcareous soil. The grapes come from two sites: the majority from the historically revered Mazon plateau at about 450 m asl, and a bit from Glen vineyards which are near to Mazon but much steeper and higher, 700 m asl, and more insulated. Glen Pinot has more fruit and more acidity. Mazon brings more body and tannins. Normally picked from mid to end of September. Fermented in open-top big casks. After malo it goes into French oak barriques for one year, 25% new, then six months in big oak casks and six months in bottle before release.

The fruit on this is extraordinary – on the nose and the palate. Jewelled and as lovely as the evening sun streaming through a stained-glass window in a little stone chapel. Intense purity and clarity and razor-sharp focus with a combination of ripeness that can only come from long hours of bright sunlight and sculpted, long, stony freshness that can only come from cold mountain nights. Well, well worth the price. (TC)
